MORE INFORMATION
Mode Z compression compresses files and directory listings on the fly as you transfer, saving bandwidth and improving transfer times. This feature is turned on by default, and is used whenever you connect to a server that supports Mode Z.
Some FTP servers that support MODE Z for file transfers do not support MODE Z transfers for directory listings. In those situations the client will only receive a listing of the total number of files and folders.
