Cannot see passwords exported from the CuteFTP Site Manager

CuteFTP

THE INFORMATION IN THIS ARTICLE APPLIES TO:

  • CuteFTP Pro® (All Windows Versions)
  • CuteFTP® Home (All Windows Versions)

PROBLEM

When I export my authentication data from the CuteFTP Site Manager, the passwords are not included. All I can see are asterisks. How can I export passwords in clear text?

SOLUTION

For security reasons, exported Site Manager data does not contain passwords. When your password is saved in the Site Manager, it is encrypted and cannot be retrieved except when it is being used as part of the authentication process by CuteFTP.

If you need access to an FTP site that is stored in a backup CuteFTP Site Manager data file (sm.dat), or in a Site Manager data file that resides on another computer, then you can manually import that data file directly into your present CuteFTP Site Manager.

On the Tools menu, click Site Manager then click Import FTP Sites and follow the onscreen instructions.

Note: Depending on your operating system the path to the CuteFTP Site Manager file may differ somewhat.

  • In Windows XP, the file that contains your private Site Manager data is stored by default at:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\GlobalSCAPE\CuteFTP(or CuteFTP Pro)\[VERSION]\SM.DAT

  • In Windows Vista, the file that contains your private Site Manager data is stored by default at:
  • C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\GlobalSCAPE\CuteFTP(or CuteFTP Pro)\[VERSION]\SM.DAT

GlobalSCAPE recommends that you backup your Site Manager data regularly.
