Sharing the Site Manager Among Two or More Users

  • CuteFTP Home (All Windows Versions)
  • CuteFTP Professional (All Windows Versions)

CuteFTP can be configured to use a common Site Manager in a networked or multi-user environment. To do so, follow these steps:

If a master Site Manager does not already exist, then you will first need to create one:

  1. Start CuteFTP and configure the master Site Manager for use.
  2. If desired, you can encrypt the master Site Manager so that a password is required to access it. To encrypt the Site Manager:
    • On the Tools menu click Site Manager, click Security and then click Encrypt Site Manager Data and follow the onscreen instructions.
  3. Close CuteFTP and copy the file named sm.dat to a shared network location. If you are sharing one Site Manager among two or more user accounts on the same computer, you can use a shared folder on the local computer. You may want to write protect the file to prevent accidental overwrites. (If one user makes changes to sm.dat and then closes CuteFTP while a second user has CuteFTP open, the second user's CuteFTP will overwrite sm.dat.)

Note: Depending on your operating system the path to the CuteFTP Site Manager file may differ somewhat.

  • In Windows XP, the file that contains your private Site Manager data is stored by default at:

  • C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\GlobalSCAPE\CuteFTP(or CuteFTP Pro)\VERSION\SM.DAT

  • In Windows Vista, the file that contains your private Site Manager data is stored by default at:

  • C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\GlobalSCAPE\CuteFTP(or CuteFTP Pro)\VERSION\SM.DAT

For each computer or user that will share the common Site Manager file:

  1. Start CuteFTP.
  2. On the Tools menu click Global Options.
  3. Click Security.
  4. In the Site Manager path box, type the full path (or browse) to the Site Manager file (sm.dat) to be used.
  5. Click OK and then configure the other computers or user accounts in the same manner.
