The Auditing and Reporting module (ARM) fails to connect to the SQL Server Express installation with a "the login failed" error

SYMPTOM

The Auditing and Reporting module (ARM) fails to connect to the SQL Server Express installation with a "the login failed" error when the service is configured to use a domain login.

RESOLUTION

Install SQL Server Management Studio Express (or use Management Studio from another location) to add the desired login for the EFT Server database.

Note: Microsoft SQL Server Express is not recommended for production ARM deployments. SQL Server Express should be used for testing or evaluation purposes only. For production environments, use a supported full SQL Server edition to ensure appropriate scalability, performance, and reliability.

Security is more strict for SQL Server Express 2008. If you want to change the login that the EFT Server service is running as, then you have to install Management Studio Express and use that to add a login for EFTDB.
