QUESTION: How do I perform a surface test using CuteBackup?

ANSWER: Please do the following:

  1. Run CuteBackup.
  2. Browse in menu to General/Settings. On the first page find 'Surface test' and change 'None' to 'Normal.'
  3. Click 'Ok.'
  4. Right-click on partition/free space block and choose option 'Retest surface.'

CHKDSK utility often misses unreliable disk sectors. That is why we do not recommend that you rely on its results. The same is true for the Windows tool from 'Properties' of disk volume.

You can also check the surface of your HDD with the vendor's original utility.

We have collected a number of links and names of utilities to HDD vendors web sites where one can find a diagnostic tool.

Drive Fitness Test (IBM/Hitachi)

DLG Diagnostic (Western Digital)

SeaTools (Seagate/Maxtor/Quantum)

Diagnostic Tool (Fujitsu)

ExelStor tools

Toshiba: There is no known Toshiba utility provided to check HDD surface and we recommend you using Drive Fitness Test (IBM/Hitachi) tool for this purpose.
